Would it be possible to not distribute the database component until the free software Java implementations can run it? How much would it cost in terms of development time to reimplement the database component in some other programming language?

Is the free software Java going to run into the same problem some have postulated Mono and dotGNU will run into with regard to Microsoft's .net (which I understand to be software patents preventing full compatibility or preventing sufficient compatibility to make Mono/dotGNU worthwhile for most tasks)?

I don't see any way for this blog to notify me in the event of followups, but I would like to be informed of responses or corrections to my post. So, I invite anyone following up on this to send me e-mail (jbn@forestfield.org) on this issue. I will try to check back in later, but I usually catch posts to this blog through planet.gnome.org.

Slightly over the top headline there, especially since OOo has required Java to do lots of things for ages, like XSLT transforms (ie the new MS Office File Formats). Howoever all is not lost. If you use ooo-build enabled versions of OOo (ooo.ximian.com) the alliance of Linux vendors who work to improve OOo you'll find those dependancies avoided or worked around with Free Software. It's good stuff.

That is incorrect: HSQLDB *CAN* run on Kaffe+Classpath right now (although very slowly) and it will probably compile under GCJ (with some tweaking perhaps. Its frontend is written in thinlet, so that shouldn't be a problem)

I think the Java reliance in OpenOffice is a huge problem currently.
