As he sort of mentions in passing there all 'Mac' porting of OOo goes on at www.neooffice.org which has an excellently working version of OpenOffice.org 1.1 with nice things like native menus atm. So there is a version of OOo that doesn't require X11.

When OpenOffice.org was published as free software, I was very hapy and full of hope, thinking that it will getting lightent with the pass of yeears, but that's not happening, even worse, 1.9 beta is very very high, and they're getting java technologies to get new features, so we goy an open office suite, that needs non-open software to work. I think that they're getting the bad path.

HSQLDB (the java tech you're talking about) runs perfectly under Kaffe, a Free (as in GPL) JVM.
