Dunno if you already did that but one thing to look out for with templates (and other things that use lots of inline code) is symbol visibility. It doesn't hurt to use -fvisibility-inlines-hidden and that can often dramatically reduce library size (and load time due to fewer relocations). Check out Ulrich Dreppers documents on creating shared libraries for more info.

-fno-threadsafe-statics also gives some good results if abiword doesn't use thread (i don't know if it does)
