Because the open source X drivers and open source kernels have *never* had a local root exploit, and if they did, they *certainly* never would have gone unnoticed for months or even years.</sarcasm>
Unfortunately, I enjoy using my hardware to its fullest extent. OSS drivers can't compare.

In that case, Sad panda, you should express your opinion with hard money (which companies actually understand) and purchase only those things known to work well with F/OSS drivers.
As I understand it, work is underway to get X off the dangerous "run-as-root" thing (with safeguards like SELinux and Exec-Shield, etc.). Do you know offhand how far that support has come?
/me hugs his Radeon 9250 that runs beautiful eye-candy and most light games at their highest settings near-flawlessly.
Don't get me wrong, if there was comparable hardware + OSS drivers, of course I would use it. But as it stands, it's pointless for me to downgrade my experience purposefully, even if it's for an inarguably good cause. It's called being American, we're assholes.

"it's pointless for me to downgrade my experience purposefully... I'll just wait around to get 0wnz0r3d, cause my data and privacy aren't worth shit. Botnets deserve a leg up, yo".
Maybe you like to play video games more that the average bear. For me, it's not worth the hassle to run binary drivers on a machine I also use for work. Asshole.
