So I take a look at the link, but I must be blind or something; I can't see what closed, proprietary technology is in use on the page. Perhaps they've updated it?

Just a note: I can't remember one time I complained about a website not working in Konqueror. I simply use another browser for those pages. So no those are not the same people.

Yeah! Who cares what the actual software is like, what matters is what format they use for their screencasts in the announcement! I mean, we all know that the announcement is the big deal here, not the software!

Seriously: Why do I get the feeling that when you can't find anything else to complain about, you complain about something as miniscule as fileformat of a screencast?

It would be vise of the KDE team to think carefully though the issues surroundings licenses, formats, copy rights, and patents.

This is areas the gnome community has taken seriously. It would be sad to end up with little or no cooperative improvements because of issues like this.

All the desktop teams should try to look for ways they can positively improve the community of the free desktop.

What threat is KDE facing for using Flash in the announcement? What problems does KDE when it comes to the things you mention? How is GNOME better in those areas?

Mono, anyone? A piece of patented technology from the #1 enemy of free software, firmly embraced by GNOME.

Are you seriously going to claim that using flash on few screencasts in KDE 4.2 release-announcement is a bigger threat to KDE than using Mono in the actual desktop is for GNOME?

I have no intention of bashing GNOME, it's a fine desktop. But some people seriously need to get a clue....

99% of people that use GNU/Linux, Windows or MacOS have the flash plugin installed.
10% of Win or Mac users have a ogg plugin (or the vlc plugin) installed.
So yes, flash is the right one if you want to reach the majority of people out there.. because not only kde or GNU/Linux users are interested in the announcement (you know, there a re ports of the applications also on Win and Mac).
It would be awesome if everyone start to use open formats, you made a point here, but for now this is the right solution.

OMG KDE used Flash, KDE has cooties.

Seriously dude, this is a news announcement for everyone and as luca says almost everyone has flash. It doesn't look good if your video doesn't play in Joe Bloggs's browser, however much you protest that you are using the "right" technology. It's not like it's being embedded into KDE.

If the only negative thing you can think of is a file format used on the release announcement page, I suspect 4.2 might be pretty good. ;-)

The video is embedded from blip.tv which usually also has the original format available.

Assuming that this format is actually something open like Ogg/Theora, it would have really made sense to link to it additionally to embedding the Flash one.

Not just for the freedom aspect, but also for the convenience aspect of being able to download, watch in a real player, with actual controls, etc.

And furthermore, looking at the amount of resources being invested in bringing Silverlight to Linux, I find the whining about KDE's use of Flash to be really, REALLY hypocritical. Why is it OK to push proprietary technology from Microsoft, but "pushing" (as in, using) proprietary technology from Adobe is a mortal sin?

I hate the smell of double-standards in the air....

KDE developer here, does not like proprietary formats...
I would have agreed with Hub if the Ogg Theora files that Ariya mentioned had not been there. But they are.
I would have agreed with Janne if I could have found any statement from Hub promoting Silverlight. The Microsoft lovers at Gnome(*) actually seem to be a vocal minority...

(*) No, Microsoft has not actually changed for the better and honestly supports open standards now. If I try to come up with reasons why people seem to believe that the results are not very favorable for the believers.

@Janne: you are probably confusing me with somebody else. At no point I advocated to use the technologies you are naming. AT NO POINT. I guess it is just convenient for you to use that argument. There is no double standard.
