Saw this, and became curious why you are moving away from TWiki? I use both TWiki and MediaWiki extensively, and can't see any particular advantage in making this move. I have to declare that I'm not unbiased; I just released the latest beta of TWiki

I'm working on doing the same thing, for a couple of reasons: (1) I don't like the way TWiki has handled security problems, in particular the mess with not following the existing disclosure and response process last spring. (2) I really like MediaWiki's dichotomy between content and metacontent (the Talk pages). (3) MediaWiki scales better to larger traffic loads (for those that have such a need); in fact, even the rdiff script has caused CPU problems on my shared host.

There are things that I like better about TWiki, of course. The markup language is a little simpler (though I will be glad when someday we're all more synchronized on this issue, keeping up with them all is getting to be a pain). I like the fact that it's in Perl, not PHP. And I like it for lightweight implementations, as it doesn't have any dependencies beyond those which are on most Unix systems already, like rcs.

Both have their drawbacks, but MediaWiki seems to be maturing faster. I would like to stick with TWiki, as I've used it for a couple of years now, but those issues -- particularly the first -- are big to me.

I am just deciding whether to use twiki or mediawiki. Which is easier to setup and maintain? We are a small group and are just looking for basic features.

I use Twiki at work, and MediaWiki for play. I've set up both. Neither is terribly hard, but MediaWiki is braindead easy. I like the organization, and although I like things about the markup of each, I prefer MediaWiki's markup. MediaWiki does require php and mysql (which Twiki does not), but most web servers already have this, so... I would change work's wiki to MediaWiki if there was a painless way to move the content.

I've got some material in our team's own privately setup MediaWiki, but my company has some time ago decided to make Twiki an official tool. So I'd like to conform to that (personally, I don't see much difference between these, just that if the Twiki platform is supported within company, then I don't have to worry about backups and other host maintenance).

I used and liked TWiki at my last job. It was precluded at my current job because we have settled on Windows+Oracle architecture, and the TWiki flat files didn't fit this. We are installing and configuring MediaWiki now, and it seems competent. I prefer the TWiki edit controls, diff support and plug-in support, but MW seems to have a much faster search engine, support editable sections, and the separation between content and discussion is useful. Niether is easy to install, and MW won't run on Oracle, just MySQL, at least with the XAMPP install kit. I'd love to hear from any that got MW to run on Oracle.

How about the security benefits? I am using mediawiki and having to create a separate wiki just for the outside seems a bit much in terms of effort, upon seeing twiki it seems i can just go with one wiki for everyone.
