What a lot of interminable, self-righteous whining. As Mark Pilgrim has recently made very clear there is no way, not a one, to put video on the Web in a manner that over 5% of the target audience will be able to view without effort without compromising on at least one principle of the movement. One can either give up and go home, or one can use the best method _currently_ available and continue to work on better solutions.

It boggles the mind that you're famous for your work on _precisely this area_ in a different field with libgphoto and yet you seem to have no sympathy whatsoever for people in other fields who try to get by using as much free software as possible and holding their nose for the other parts instead of just giving up. Were you to obey your own principles you'd tell anyone who bought a camera which didn't interoperate with linux out of the box to throw it away.

The Flash 9 plugin will NOT be for amd64 either. Only Intel 32-bits.

there IS a free option, and that is animated GIF. see byzanz tool.
it does have downsides, but nothing critical:
* only 256 colors
* no sound
* can't be too long or it will take too much memory

franckly, that good enough. people talked about compromises. there you go, here are your compromises. and that will work on ANY browser on ANY operating system. only text-based browsers won't work but that's as good as you'll get.

Having inline video on a web page is nice, but is not the only way to show video content on the web. Just as smoking, I guess all the Google Video and You Tube fans have made inline flash movies the current addiction and it's hard to quit it. Good for them.

At least the Ubuntu Video site should provide alternate means of viewing the videos - not only flash, which doesn't even exist under 64-bit platforms, for example. Particularly when it's soooooooo easy to convert / produce Ogg Theora from source/documented/standard formats (DV, etc.).

Ideally, it should put Ogg Theora first to be consistent with the message. Hub, did you at least try to contact the author ? What was his answer ? Unless you do that, you'll get more spanking in the future ;)
