Althogh I think your idea is great, and hopefully will bring some results, an email such as the one you've posted doesn't seem great. I think something more detailed and kind would be more likely to be answered to, rather than being ignored. And remember: even if they answer negatively, at that point you have something to follow back on.

Not owning a digital camera yet, my trusty Canon A-1 is still in full service. I will soon do one better :-). Start of June I will be in the marker for a new digital camera. in the EUR 800-1000 range.

I'll simply mail all manufacurers that I will use this camera with linux and that public availability of the file spec for OSS support is a must for my final purchase decission, can they please elaborate on their position?

So everybody in the market for a new camera please do this, because contrary to current customers this can result in a loss of shortterm sales as well.

You might also want to request the protocol for tethered photography, ie when you control the cammera from a computer (you can do it with the cannon software.)

Today I submitted following request on Canon US and Canon Europe websites (I've discovered Canon Europe a bit later, they also needs registration, but they give you Incident ID though, mine is 1782283).

I'm seriously considering buying your great PowerShot S70 camera. The only problem I have to solve is how to convert RAW images on my operating system (Debian GNU/Linux). Could you please provide documentation of the Canon CR2 RAW format so I could write software to decode and convert my photos?

I first received a message pointing me towards the SDK, but I replied mentioning Linux support and the OpenRAW initiative, and asked that the information be passed to the appropriate parties in the company. I received a prompt reply back saying that it was done.

Yes, they pointed me to SDK, too. I'm just going to aswer and try to remind them politely I'm not using "Windows 98SE/2000/Me/XP" nor "Mac OS 9.x / X (10.2 and higher)".

I emailed my local Nikon office in Norway, but I doubt that they will have a lot of influence. Dpending on their answer, I will contact Nikon in a nearby country where they run the business themselves.

nikonimaging.com/global/a... has information about where you can find your local nikon representative.

In Norway, Nikon will start distributing themselves in September, IIRC. That would probably be a better time to nag them.

also write careful, reasoned, determined letters
to the corporate headquarters of the camera
manufacturters, whelp, it'll all just happen faster.

I got the answer from the Nikon third party importer in Norway today. They said that many others have been asking the same question, and all I could get would be the SDK under an NDA for Windows and possibly Mac (they didn't mention that).

Anyway, I promptly asked them to let Nikon hear that there are, in their own words, many people who have posed the same question.
