I don't see anything bad in the copyright assignment. You (as the author of a piece of code) lose nothing, you can still do anything e.g use the same code in proprietary software. But the projects gains a lot it's in the position to defend the license of the code even if you are no longer interested in the project or not detectable.

some people just don't like giving away copyright. copyright assignment also allow the new assignee to do whatever they want with the code, including making it non free. and actually I don't know whether assigning copyright is a transfer were relinquish your own rights or not. it is something that have to be thought about. one example is the author of the GPL library that sells it for non-GPL-compatible use. said author want copyright assignment of external contributors to be able to sell it too. but I clearly agree on the fact that it makes some other things easier.

But here you can find the Fiduciary Licence Agreement (FLA): fsfeurope.org/projects/fl...
This is the same like the copyright assignment of the FSF but adapted to the european copyright system. Here you can see that the author will not lose any rights on his own code and the FLA would become void if the FSFE would try to use the work in non-free software.

So if the copyright assignment is in the same spirit like the FLA i don't think you have to worry. But it would be interesting to read something about the copyright assignment of the FSF, Maybe you have more luck and can find it?

Haha, nice post.
I didn't even think about it when I put "low quality" and "C++" next to each other. But it's obvious now that it upsets a C++ dev. ;)
And those were mainly the reasons for me not wanting to code on it. I don't like C++, so I wouldn't join a project that uses it. I'm btw not sure anymore if the "low quality" refered to Gnash's rendering quality (GNash is fast but it doesn't have Cairo's quality) or the code. I've tried looking at it sometimes when figuring out how something is supposed to work and could never make sense of their code structure. But that could be me and my C++ and not their fault.
Just for you, I'll say it again: I have no opinion on C++ as a programming language, it's just not right for me.

But I'm curious about where you had success with Gnash. Could you provide some URLs to Flash files that work nicely in Gnash? I need to add them to my testsuite. I'm running out of movies that provide small steps for improvement. All the movies I have are worse in Gnash than in Swfdec.

Oh, and what issues did you have when compiling? Not that I'm surprised it cdoesn't work anywhere but at home as much as I'm changing around, but it doesn't hurt if I fix it.
