I'm ranting about Evolution, its speed and its antispam, I'm not alone. Someone should really start to replace this antispam by what we find in Thunderbird / Mozilla, including flagging as \Junk over IMAP (I couldn't find any reference in RFCs and...

Some more comments:

ThunderBird:
Poor spam filtering (I get perhaps 20 spam per day, yet have a spam corpus of 29,000 spams)
IMAP system can get very confused with which mails are deleted and which aren't.
Attaching files with '#' in the filename causes it problems

Evolution:
Can't show/hide the full to/cc headers as easily as ThunderBird
No spam detection
Mark as junk leaves the email in the same IMAP folder - which isn't very nice for other email clients accessing the same IMAP store.

Evolution can do mail threading. Hit CTRL-t.

Evolution has spam detection, and marking as Junk moves it to a Junk folder.

Never tried Thunderbird, and Evolution's (1.5.x) poor/slow spam protection made me switch to gmail. Wanna gmail account? I have 50 invites.

Try using offlineimap (quux.org/devel/offlineima... ) in combination with mutt. Mutt's IMAP support still sucks, but offlineimap totally rocks. (Also see mako.yukidoke.org/copyrig... :).

Now switch back to Outlook Express or Outlook, mailers that *truly* suck. I manage IT for our small software company, and we have a few Outlook holdouts ... nothing but large, evil problems. Try to import, or move a mail folder between machines or drives (Outlook will often corrupt it's own archives). Change mail settings, or use PPP (Outlook will crash when switching between Lans or mailservers).

At least Evo and TBird will get better ;-)

Mutt is really nice. I think it's the best mua out there.
But that's a matter of taste. I think thunderbird has some nice features too , but i like mutt better.

I do send plaintext mail (from Evolution), but I prefer to recieve HTML email. It has to be sane HTML, though. No backgrounds or crazy fonts, just regular <p>, <br>, <blockquote> and such. Of course, it must also be of type multipart/alternative with a plaintext fallback.

Why? Because HTML mail look better and are easier to read.

If I display plaintext emails using a nice proportional font, you can bet that most of them will look bad and some will even be unreadable. The layout often assumes that every character has the same width. Also, the right edge of the paragraphs won't be nice and even.

HTML mail, on the other hand, will use a nice font and adapt itself to both the width of the window and my chosen font size. And when they are needed, and only then, the author can use <pre> or <tt>. Also, tables (not for layout) are possible. And real hyperlinks.

I have been using ThunderBird for a while and am reasonably happy with it. Contrary to Hub I find the spam filtering works pretty well.

My main complain is about performance and resource demands. The memory requirements are over 3x greater than with my previous emailer (PegasusMail) but with no significant extra features. But what really annoys me is the size of the mail box. My current box, which has not got that much in it, I guess ~150 messages, is flipping 65MB in size, in spite of having the compacting options set, etc. (for comparison, my old PagasusMail box, eventhough much more full, was <8MB). This is a real pain when it comes to backing up.

What, on the other hand I really like, and why I am going to stick with it, is the ability to share mailbox between my win32 and Linux installations.

I will diffenetly recomment sylpheed-claws. I believe that it does not suffer of any of your mentioned bugs, it's fast and it's lightweight.
